Texas Tidbits: Marketplace Chaplains ministry marks 30 years

Expansion into South Korea and China are among the highlights marking the 30-year anniversary of Marketplace Chaplains, the largest and original workplace chaplaincy organization. The Dallas-based organization serves in 46 states, 1,009 cities, five foreign countries and one commonwealth. Since its beginning in 1984 with a single company and one chaplain, founder Gil Stricklin, Marketplace Chaplains now has nearly 3,000 chaplains working in 3,309 service locations, spanning 35 industry types, caring for more than 564,000 client company employees and their family members. Stricklin—former youth evangelism consultant with the Baptist General Convention of Texas—now serves as chairman and chief executive officer of Marketplace Ministries Inc., the parent organization for five organizational subsidiaries. Along with Marketplace Chaplains and Marketplace Chaplains International, the other subsidiaries are Railroad Chaplains, Senior Living Chaplains and the Marketplace Ministries Foundation.

HPU and ETBU hailed as most affordable. Two universities affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas have been recognized among the 50 most affordable Christian colleges in the United States. Howard Payne University in Brownwood ranked No. 29, and East Texas Baptist University in Marshall ranked No. 35 on the list, posted on the Christian Universities Online website. Christian Universities Online reports colleges on the Top 50 list had to be accredited by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools or a member/affiliate of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. The website ranked the 50 schools by average net price data put out by the National Center for Education Statistics. Also, in order to ensure the comparisons were as commensurable and practical as possible, the website set a lower limit on the student population at 1,000.
