Around the State: DBU honors Drayton McLane

Dallas Baptist Univeristy will name Drayton McLane the recipient of the 2008 Russell H. Perry Free Enterprise Award during the annual award dinner to be held Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas. U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison will be the keynote speaker. Over the last 21 years, the dinner has raised more than $2.9 million in scholarship funds for more than 1,250 DBU students.

Howard Payne University will serve its 25th annual free community Thanksgiving feast from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 27. Last year, 1,976 meals were served on campus and through home delivery to families and homebound individuals in Brownwood and Early. The staff of Howard Payne’s Sodexho Food Service donate their time preparing the food, which is served by volunteers. Cost is covered entirely by individual and organizational donations.

Houston Baptist University’s Center for Christianity in Business will present “The Christmas Gift,” a night of music and testimonies of giving at 7 p.m. Dec. 2. Grammy Award winner Wayne Watson will perform, along with comedian Bob Smiley and vocalists Rhonda Williams and Scott Belin. Individual tickets are $50. All proceeds will benefit Star of Hope Mission in Houston, which ministers to the city’s homeless people. Charles Miles, an HBU alumnus and Star of Hope board member, will share his story of how the Star of Hope Mission rescued him from a life on the streets. A team from the Fred M. Hale School of Business at East Texas Baptist University placed fourth in the statewide ethics match Nov. 2.

Carroll Marr, 10th, as pastor of Southcliff Church in Fort Worth, Nov. 2.

Delbert Milstead, 25th, as pastor of Central Church in Buna, Dec. 21.

Retiring

Jimmy Griffith, as pastor of First Church in Merkel after 18 years, Oct. 19. He was in ministry 37 years, including 11 years at First Church in Paducah and five years at East Side Church in Haskell. He will be available at (325) 928-4362 for supply preaching after the first of the year.

Deaths

Sweet Hopkins, 51, Nov. 2 in Garland. She had been children’s minister at First Church in Richardson the last 12 years. She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Kenneth; daughters Kendall and Ivy; and brother, Billy Pickens.

Chester Hedrick, Nov. 5 in Pilot Grove, Mo. A Texas pastor more than 30 years, he was the former pastor of Hutto Church in Hutto and principal of Hutto Elementary School. He is survived by his wife, Lois; daughter, Judith Koon; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Hill Jr., 91, Nov. 6 in Abilene. A former minister of education and music at First Church in Littlefield and director of activities at First Church in Lubbock, he spent 23 years on the administrative staff of Hardin-Simmons University, serving for part of that time as director of alumni affairs. He retired from the school in 1978 following a massive stroke. After retirement, he spent his time travelling and learning to paint with his left hand. Although the stroke took his ability to speak, he continued to sing with his wife, Betty, at numerous banquets and church gatherings. He was a member of First Church in Abilene. He is survived by his wife of 69 years; daughters, Sarah Mulkey and Susan Stuerzenberger; sister, Audean Rivers; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
