Howard Payne University will hold its annual Young and Summers Scholars programs July 16-20 from 9 a.m. to noon on HPU's Academy of Freedom campus. Young Scholars, for students entering first through third grades, will include instruction in music, history, reading and physical education. Summers Scholars, for students entering fourth through sixth grades, includes robotics, computer graphics, reading, history and physical education. Both groups will study the presidential election and Electoral College. The cost of both programs is $100 per student and includes a souvenir, snacks and supplies. Registration deadline is July 2. Hardin-Simmons University physical therapy students worked with the nursing instructors, using the simulation mannequins at the nursing school to learn how to interact with hospital patients. The new interdisciplinary program acquaints the students in the physical therapy doctorate program with handling patients confined by ventilators and other equipment in hospitals. They use the simulation lab at Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing.

Dallas Baptist University hosted the 24th annual Decatur Baptist College spring reunion. The class of 1962 was honored for its 50th anniversary, and the class of 1952 was recognized for its 60th anniversary. Bryan Price received the Distinguished Ser-vice Award, and DBU professor Marsha Pool received the honorary alumna award.

• Former Baylor University head football coach Grant Teaff received San Marcos Baptist Academy's Exemplary Service Medal for "distinguished service to God and man through Christian education." He accepted the award during the academy's commencement ceremony, where he delivered the graduation address.

Marila Palmer has been named assistant provost and assistant professor of education at East Texas Baptist University. She also will oversee the newly created Office of Academic Success and Graduate Services.

Travis Seekins, associate vice president of technology services, was named Hardin-Simmons University's staff member of the year, and Dan Stiver, professor of theology, named the faculty member of the year. Faculty and staff receiving anniversary pins for longevity of service include Margaret Forrester, 45 years; Robert Barnes, Robert Fink and Jesse Fletcher, 35 years; Larry McGraw, 30 years; Brian Cargile, 25 years; Camellia Chil-dress, Darrell Hnizdor, Chris-topher McNair, Michael White-horn and Don Williford, 20 years; Steve Coleman, Shane Davidson, Michelle Dose, Forrest McMillan, Lauren Puckett, Cheryl Purcell, Stacey Martin, Christopher Thibault, Traci Thompson, Elizabeth Torres and Ann Wheless, 15 years; and Shanna Briggs, Wayne Dorothy, Dee Garrett, D.J. Gililland, Nina Ouimette, Tracy Parker, Kenny Stephens and Wendi Wolfram, 10 years.

Deaths

Eddie Huffman, 79, May 16 in Wichita Falls. He served as a trustee and on the board of development of Hardin-Simmons University, his alma mater. He also served as chairman of deacons at First Church in Wichita Falls. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert; and sisters, Eloise Thompson and Jane Lee. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gayle; son, Woodie; daughter, Sandra Zorn; and eight grandchildren.

Barbara Chafin, 82, May 30 in Austin. She spent several years working on the editorial staff of the Baptist Sunday School Board, and in 1953 became a student at Southwestern Seminary, where she met her future husband, Kenneth. He later was a pastor of South Main Church in Houston and Walnut Street Church in Louisville, Ky., and also was a professor at Southwestern and Southern seminaries. She re-turned to writing in the 1990s, including devotionals for Daily Guideposts. She was preceded in death by her husband and her brother, William. She is survived by her daughters, Nan-cy Chafin and Ellen Wavro; son, Troy; and two grandchildren.

Wayne Allen, 82, June 4 in Carrollton. A graduate of Howard Payne University and Southwestern Seminary, he was pastor of First Church in Carrollton 34 years. After re-tiring in 1999, he served as the Dallas As-sociation/ Dal-las Baptist Uni-versity liason, as well as a professor in the College of Christian Faith at DBU until February. He was a trustee of numerous boards, including those of Southwest-ern and DBU. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Theresa; sons, Steve and Grant; daughter, Sunni Stokeld; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Templo de South Houston held homecoming services in connection with its 37th anniversary May 6. Ellis Orozco, pastor of First Church in Richardson, was the guest preacher. David Deulefeu is pastor.

Hampton Road Church in DeSoto recognized Frank Price, Frank Hibler, J.R. Sexton, Milton McFeron and Pat Duncan as deacons emeriti.

Correction: In an "Around the State" item noting the 25th anniversary of the Texas Baptist Ministry Assistants, Vice President Beck Powers was incorrectly identified as a member of South Park Baptist Church in Houston. She is a member of First Baptist Church in San Angelo.
