The eighth annual Baylor University Sacred Harp Singing will be held Feb. 7 in the Great Hall of Truett Seminary. The singing will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a brief introduction to Sacred Harp singing. After a lunch break, singing will begin again and conclude at 3 p.m. For more information about this free event, call (254) 710-2360.

The College of Christian Studies at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor will present a seminar, “Conversations on Preaching,” led by renowned preacher and teacher of preaching Calvin Miller Feb. 19. The conference’s three continuing sessions will begin at 9:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., all held in the Meyer Christian Studies Center. Registration is $15 per person, or $25 for a married couple. The registration price includes the evening meal and a copy of Miller’s latest book, Preaching: The Art of Narrative Exposition. A reunion choir of more than 300 former and current vocalists led worship as Tallowood Church in Houston dedicated the church’s new $30 million facility. Three of the church’s four pastors and all its music ministers and pianists returned to participate in the dedication. Former pastors Lester Collins and Russell Dilday made the trek back to celebrate the day with Duane Brooks, pastor since 1998.

The concert choir of Howard Payne University has announced the release of its newest recording, “When I Survey.” The CD is a collection of hymns, including “Jesus Loves Me,” “Jesus Paid It All,” “Marching to Zion” and “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” The cost of the CD is $15 with $3 additional for shipping. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor presented degrees to 207 students during winter commencement ceremonies. Of those, 190 received bachelor’s degrees, and 17 receceived master’s degrees. Chelsea Caspell of Allen received the Alpha Chi award for highest overall grade-point average.

Dallas Baptist University granted degrees to 288 undergraduate and 176 graduate students during its winter commencement service. Sheila Cook, wife of DBU President Gary Cook, also received an honorary doctor of humanities degree.

Joel Allison, president and CEO of Baylor Health Care System in Dallas, has been named the 2008 recipient of the Texas Hospital Association’s Earl M. Collier Award for Distin-guished Health Care Adminis-tration. He joined Baylor in 1993 and became president and CEO in 2000.

Deaths

Dudley Bragg, 78, Dec. 19 in San Antonio. A graduate of Hardin-Simmons University and Southwestern Seminary, he was pastor of Rockcrossing Church in Vernon; Bunavista Church in Borger; Faith Church in Wichita Falls; Sharon Church in Wichita, Kan.; First Church in Haskell; First Church in Pecos; and First Church in Del Rio. He is survived by his wife, Bobby; sons, Robert, Todd and Val; daughter, Lynnetta Carter; 13 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Events

First Church in Plano celebrated the successful completion of its three-year “Imagine” campaign Jan. 11. The campaign provided capital funds for refurbishing existing facilities to accomodate expanded ministry needs, and also eliminated the church’s long-term indebtedness. Includ-ed in the sanctuary remodel was the installation of a pipe organ and grand piano. Jerry Carlisle is pastor.

First Church in Devers will hold its 12th annual chili cook-off and gospel singing Jan. 31. The chili supper will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the music at 6 p.m. Featured vocal groups are The Break Away Quartet from Sante Fe and The Rileys from Groveton. Major League Baseball pitcher Andy Pettitte will speak in the 9:15 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. services at The Heights Church in Richardson Feb. 1. The New York Yankee left-hander has thrown 2,002 strikeouts and never has had a losing season.

Calallen Church in Corpus Christi will present a free showing of the movie Fireproof Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. Childcare will be provided, but space is limited. Literacy ConneXus and the Baylor University Center for Literacy will hold a conference for people who teach English as a second language to internationals, immigrants and refugees and universities at Champion Forest Church in Houston March 7. Registration will begin that morning at 8 a.m., and the conference will conclude at 4:30 p.m. A noon meal is included in the registration cost. Among the 25 breakout workshop topics are pronunciation, family literacy, beginning international work on campus, cross-cultural communication, teaching English overseas, holistic work with refugees and more. • The launch event for the Dallas County Cowboy Church, Mesquite, will be held Feb. 8 at 10:30 am. The new cowboy church has been meeting since July, 2008 and has recently purchased land in Balch Springs, 4627 Pioneer. The launch will provide opportunity for the church to officially dedicate the new property and facilities for serving the Lord and the community. Randall Everett, executive director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, will be the guest speaker.  Lunch will be served from a chuckwagon provided by Texas Fellowship of Cowboy Churches and many activities are planned for the afternoon, including a concert by the DCCC 11-member band.
