SAN ANTONIO—The Texas Baptist Bivocational/Small-Church Association honored one of its own, elected officers and targeted a ministry to children during its annual meeting at the Baptist University of the Americas July 11-12.
Greg Brumit, pastor of Kendrick Lane Baptist Church in Waco 31 years, received the Exemplary Bivocational Pastor of the Year Award.
Brumit works for a Waco funeral home, but he and his wife, Debbie, pour themselves into the ministry of their church, noted Richard Ray, the association’s outgoing president.
Kendrick Lane Baptist, a neighborhood church south of downtown Waco, shares its building with Viento Fuerte Centro de Adoracion, a Hispanic congregation. Since Viento Fuerte outgrew Kendrick Lane, the Anglo church now meets in the fellowship hall so its Spanish-speaking sisters and brothers can worship in the larger sanctuary, Ray reported.
In addition to serving as pastor and ministering to hurting families through the funeral home, Brumit maintains a ministry that provides recycled medical equipment for poor people in the community, Ray said.
Brumit has served on the staff of the Waco Regional Baptist Association and has been involved in many of its activities and ministries.
Bivocational/Small-Church Association members unanimously elected a new slate of officers during their annual business session.
They chose David Keith, pastor of Carlton Baptist Church in Carlton, as president. He will serve alongside Charles Lavine, pastor of Terrace Acres Baptist Church in Fort Worth, first vice president; Bill Kroeger, pastor of Bellaire Baptist Church in San Antonio, second vice president; and Dennis Phariss, pastor of First Baptist Church in Lolita, secretary.
Ray became the association’s part-time executive director, a position created last year.

The association also voted to participate in Bibles for Boys, a ministry conducted by the Valley Baptist Missions Education Center in Harlingen. The center provides short-term transitional lodging for immigrant boys who cross the Rio Grande into Texas, Ray said, noting each boy receives a Bible in Spanish.
The association approved a recommendation to support the ministry by providing 10 percent of its annual revenue to buy Bibles, which cost $2 each. The association also agreed to research and support a ministry to girls in the region.
