God using Texas Baptists to draw state to himself, speakers say

HOUSTON—God is calling Texas to himself, and Texas Baptists are one of the tools he can use to bring the state closer, according to the featured speaker during the Baptist General Convention of Texas-sponsored Hispanic Evangelism Conference.

Alberto Mottesi, an evangelist whose radio program is heard throughout Latin America, said he has seen God moving throughout Central and South America, where people are coming to Christ in large numbers.

He relayed a story about a recent a recent arena crusade in Bologna, Guatemala, where he spoke. People responded by crowding the aisles to profess their faith in Christ. More than that, people literally ran out of nearby bars to repent of their sins and give their lives over to Christ.

God wants that scene to be replicated around the globe, Mottesi said. “That’s not only in Bologna. That will be Texas,” he said.

Mottesi noted this will happen when Texas Christians fall so in love with Jesus they naturally share their faith with others. The key to kingdom growth is not “strong religion,” but in “proclaiming the power of Jesus Christ.”

Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to illuminate the minds and paths of believers, the evangelist said. When guided by the Holy Spirit, Christ-followers can have a significant impact on the people around them as they did following Pentecost.

“Evangelism that produces fruit and produces it in abundance does not depend on strategies, but fundamentally on men and women being in love with Jesus Christ,” Mottesi said.

Texas Baptists can have a similar effect on the people they encounter if they are willing to glorify God in their homes, neighborhoods and communities, Mottesi said. In response to Mottesi’s message, conference participants pledged to live out and share their faith through Texas Hope 2010, a BGCT effort to share the hope of Christ with every Texan by Easter 2010.

If Texas Baptists follow God’s leadership, they can reach the entire state before Easter 2010, Mottesi preached. “There is no limit to the power of God.”
