LAREDO— This year, more than 80 families served by the Baptist Child & Family Services Healthy Start program in Laredo celebrated the Christmas season with a traditional Mexican posada—a reenactment of the journey by Joseph and Mary's to Bethlehem.

Two children in BCFS’ Healthy Start program played the roles of Mary and Joseph.

For more than a decade, BCFS has provided prenatal and medical care for expectant mothers and their young children through a state-of-the-art mobile medical clinic. Thanks to this work, many women in the colonias are receiving prenatal care for the first time and giving birth to healthier babies.

As part of the posada celebration, volunteers made available Christmas gifts for the children who participated.

"Many of the families we serve don't have family nearby to celebrate Christmas with and might not be able to provide their children with a good meal or special gift," said Linda Mata, BCFS program supervisor. "The posada makes sure that Christmas is not just another day of the year but instead says, 'Let us all come together to celebrate as Christ's family.'"
