DALLAS – Victor Rodriguez, pastor of South San Filadelfia Baptist Church in San Antonio, was elected president of the Hispanic Baptist Convention of Texas in a close vote June 29.

In a series of run-off votes, messengers to the Hispanic Baptist Convention Annual Meeting whittled down a field of five presidential candidates to Rodriguez and Teo Cisneros before electing Rodriguez as president.

The pastor, who will serve the convention during the convention’s centennial anniversary, follows Baldemar Borrego’s three-year tenure as president.

“This is such a special privilege,” said Rodriguez, a second-generation Hispanic Baptist Convention president, following in his father Manuel’s footsteps.

“We have such a great opportunity to reach Hispanics across the state.”

Messengers also elected: First Vice President Manuel Rios, pastor of Iglesia Bautista Monte Calvario in San Antonio; Second Vice President Jesse Rincones, pastor of Alliance Church in Lubbock; Third Vice President Daniel “Tiny” Dominguez, pastor of Journey of Community Heights in Lubbock; and Secretary Alex Camacho, pastor of Iglesia Bautista Emanuel in McKinney.

In other business, messengers appointed a committee to study the convention’s unification agreement with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. The current unification agreement was signed in 1963.

“As a committee, we are going to look into seeing what is available, and how we can make that relationship better,” Rodriguez said. Leaders of both conventions will work together in the process.

Rodriguez, who has been in the ministry 24 years, will begin his presidential term by building momentum for next year’s convention in San Antonio.
