DALLAS—An equipment swap involving Texas Baptist Men and the Salvation Army will benefit both agencies’ disaster relief ministries.

tbm henderson300Terry Henderson, TBM state disaster relief director, explains how the equipment swap was worked out.TBM exchanged a surplus generator for a 53-foot bus the Salvation Army no longer needed. The bus served as a communication center for Salvation Army disaster response.

Before TBM had time to change the signs on the vehicle, it was pressed into service as a mobile command post when tornadoes hit Oklahoma. Volunteers left Dallas early May 22 to set up the unit at the Expo Center in Shawnee, Okla., at the request of Oklahoma Baptists.

The mobile unit will provide TBM flexibility in terms of where it sets up on-site headquarters during a disaster. If set up on a church’s property, the self-contained command center would enable to TBM to operate without imposing on a church’s hospitality, noted Terry Henderson, TBM state disaster relief director.
