BaptistWay Press is offering to churches Good News in the New Testament, a 13-session New Testament survey, for only the cost of shipping. “We’re doing this with the thought that this might help churches and classes as they face some tough economic times,” said Ross West, BaptistWay Press publisher. “Plus we’ve found that when classes become familiar with our materials, they like them.” For more information, call (866) 249-1799.

Counterpoint Music offers Easter musicals. Counterpoint Music, the music imprint of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, is offering Easter musicals for the first time. The organization—launched last fall to provide downloadable, low-cost, high-quality music resources for churches of all sizes—is offering two musicals. The musicals—one for contemporary-style services, one for traditional services—are available for about half the cost of what many other publishers charge. For more information, visit www.counterpointmusic.org.

Texas WMU changes staffing approach. Woman’s Missionary Union of Texas is moving to a staffing approach that will involve several contract consultants rather than paid full-time program staff—at least during the interim executive leadership of Nelda Seal. When Seal became interim executive director last June, Texas WMU had four paid full-time program staff members. All have left as the organization moved toward the new approach. “Several contract consultants already are being employed in order to service the churches and associations,” Seal said. “We believe this approach will better serve our membership. Exciting days are ahead for WMU of Texas as we accept responsibility for mission education in all of our churches.”

Grant helps at-risk youth start business. Baptist Child & Family Services received a $475,000 grant through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help at-risk youth gain real-world work experience by starting their own businesses. Funds will help establish Green & Clean in Kerrville, a youth-owned- and-operated business specializing in lawn care and maintenance and interior cleaning. Local businesses, the Hill Country Master Gardeners Association and the Texas Agrilife Extension are providing on-the-job training for young adults employed by Green & Clean. Lawn maintenance specialists will help the young people gain certification in landscaping. Additionally, BCFS is conducting training for Green & Clean staff, covering such issues as having a good work ethic, being dependable, dressing appropriately at work and customer-service skills.
