Texas TidbitsMusic degree program planned at BUA. Baptist University of the Américas will launch a bachelor of arts in music degree program in the fall semester. Lack of previous formal music education will not disqualify prospective students from entry into the program. The degree will concentrate on music theory and history. Even though it will not emphasize instrumental or vocal performance, it will require all students achieve a certain level of proficiency in piano and/or voice. Music majors will have 46 hours of music courses, in addition to 47 hours in general studies, 10 hours of foundation and leadership courses, and 21 hours of biblical and theological studies courses.

Schools honored for community service. Three universities affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas earned national honors for their community service. Dallas Baptist University, East Texas Baptist University and Hardin-Simmons University were named to the U.S. President's Community Service Honor Roll. They were among 23 schools in Texas and about 600 nationally to receive the recognition. The Corporation for National and Community Service oversees the honor roll in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Campus Compact and the American Council on Education. Factors considered for honor roll status include the scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service and the extent to which a school offers academic service-learning courses.
