Already, we believe Baylor has the largest collection of black gospel music in an academic setting,” said Pattie Orr, vice president for information technology and dean of Baylor University libraries. “The endowment will assure that this work can proceed long-term to preserve records, tapes or whatever media may be at risk in the future.”

Baylor athletics complex earns LEED certification. For the second time in four months, Baylor University has achieved a major environmental rating for satisfying rigorous standards that address environmental impacts in the design, construction, operations and management of a building. Baylor’s Alwin O. and Dorothy Highers Athletics Complex—including the Simpson Athletics and Academic Center—has been awarded a Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design silver rating by the U.S. Green Building Council in its “new construction” rating system. The 96,300-square-foot Highers Complex/Simpson Center, opened in November 2008, is the university’s first new-building certified structure. In June, Baylor’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary, built in 2002, enabled the university to become the first Texas university to earn LEED certification in the building council’s existing buildings rating system.

Church launches $130 million building campaign. First Baptist Church in Dallas announced plans for a $130 million building program. The 1.5-million-square-foot downtown campus will include a 3,000-seat sanctuary, a six-story education building, a sweeping glass-fronted concourse and a sky bridge. The facility will be certified by the LEED Green Building Rating System. Pastor Robert Jeffress told the congregation $62 million already has been committed to the campaign. The church’s historic sanctuary—built in 1890—will be retained for weddings, funerals and special events, but several other buildings will be demolished.
