A construction worker was killed when he and a coworker fell from a construction barge on the Brazos River while working on the pedestrian bridge leading from the Baylor University campus to the new McLane Stadium.

One worker immediately was taken to Providence Health Center in Waco where he was treated for hypothermia and later released.

With the assistance of Morgan’s Point Dive Team from Belton and Texas Parks and Wildlife, Waco police officers and Waco Fire Department personnel initiated a recovery mission for the second worker. They later located the body of Jose Dario Suarez who was pronounced dead at 8:18 p.m., Jan. 29.

“Our thoughts go out to the Suarez family at this terribly sad hour,” Baylor University President and Chancellor Ken Starr said. “All of Baylor Nation extends our deepest sympathies as we remember in our prayers Jose Suarez and all those whom he loved.”
