RE: ‘Shall the Fundamentalists Win?’ 100 years later

This opinion piece was an oversimplification of the tides of theology which coursed through the veins of the American and European churches and theological studies over the last two centuries.

However, my biggest concern was the spirit of fundamentalism evidenced by writings and sermons of fundamentalist preachers during these times. What is that spirit? It is the spirit of exclusion that draws a circle to our liking and always leaves others out. That spirit was addressed in Fosdick’s sermon.

Having pastored through the fundamentalist takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention, I saw that up front and close a lot. Perhaps the best way to summarize accurately what I saw and experienced was the fundamentalists won, but the kingdom of God lost.
