RE: Voices: Donald Trump is protecting religious freedom in a perilous age

The issues of religious freedom and abortion are the bait with which Donald Trump captured Christians and holds us hostage.

A recent column is right to point out Trump has done great things for religious freedom in the United States. Trump also has been successful at nominating conservative judges to our nation’s courts.

At the same time, however, Trump is advancing a racist and hateful agenda.

Trump knows evangelical Christians will overlook this agenda because of his work on religious freedom and abortion.

We have allowed this for far too long. We no longer can stand by while the Trump administration gives us freedom in law, but denies us the ability to serve the poor and oppressed in practice.

We must ask ourselves: What are we going to do with the religious freedom we are so fortunate to enjoy in this country?

Are we going to use that freedom to deny wedding cakes or marriage licenses to LGBTQ persons? Are we going to use that freedom to fund private schools so our children will not have to attend the “failing” public schools?

I think we should use that freedom to advocate on behalf of the poor—on behalf of the oppressed—on behalf of the alien.
