Letters: Understanding horse racing

image_pdfimage_print

I truly do not understand those who oppose helping Texas horse racing by allowing slot machines and advance deposit wagering. This would help tracks even the playing field with neighboring states.

Jobs include those all the way from the people who grow and bale the hay to the vets and farriers.  Thousands of jobs would be lost.

Horse racing is here. Why not allow them to expand?

And the beauty of it, you don’t have to participate if you don’t want to. Simple as that.

Moore, Knox should know Jesus ‘more completely’

I was shocked when I read Russell Moore’s statement denouncing the Eric Garner grand jury decision.

It appears he made judgment statements without having facts to back himself up, which is quite unethical. What a disgrace for an ethics leader. This case is not a race-related case but rather deals with a criminal event where both races happened to be involved.

At this point in time, Moore should apologize to his large audience for making unsubstantiated statements. This article does not speak well for an editor to allow something like this to be printed on the BaptistStandard.com website.

My prayer is for you and Russell to come to know our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ more completely, as we all make mistakes on this journey called life.

Jesus would welcome all

How ironic today’s Christian representatives will not welcome all who come to their door or our Capitol. I sometimes wonder about our churches.

Without any planning, Jesus met a hated tax collector, called him by name, shook his hand, and demanded to go to his house for lunch with Jesus’ group of friends. Jesus did all this in public because the so-called religious crowd grumbled about his going. The crowd followed Jesus and those with him to the tax collector’s home.  While the crowd could still hear him, Jesus said: “Today salvation has come to this house because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek out and save the lost” (Luke 19:9-10).

The national news and the Austin newspaper noticed our Texas representative from the Belton area ordered her staff to eject any Muslim-American Texas citizen who would not hold up his hand and take the Pledge of Allegiance.  She left no instructions to check whether or not any Muslim Texans were wearing the uniform and service ribbons of the U.S. military. This is not what Jesus would do!

Gov. Abbott and Lt. Gov. Patrick, how about quoting that Scripture the next time you stand on the Capitol steps for a television sound bite? Remember Jesus kicked over tax tables and whipped up on the money-changers in the temple, calling them a bunch of snakes. Yet he could walk outside, go down a road, meet a group of strangers who had leprosy, heal them all, and then wonder why only the foreigner came back to thank him. (Luke 19:45-46, 17:11-19)
