Letters: What led to Christian persecution?

image_pdfimage_print

“Persecution of Christians reached historic levels in 2014. Will 2015 be worse?” indicates persecution of Christians broke records last year. A lot of Christians are undergoing real persecution that involves torture, imprisonment and death.  It’s not the “persecution” we often hear about in America, where folks argue about what to call a decorated tree put up at Halloween to sell more goodies in our consumer-driven society or the politically correct greeting.

I couldn’t help but notice the article blames President Obama for the increase in the persecution. Does anyone recall the recent report by a Senate committee that outlined the torture of Muslims inflicted by the Bush/Cheney Administration?

In 1968, my unit, along with Marines and South Vietnamese troops, kicked the North Vietnamese out of the city of Hue, which they had occupied during the Tet Offensive. We discovered they had tortured and murdered thousands of people, and the world was horrified. However, a short time later, the My Lai Massacre and cover-up happened and this changed the entire picture.

Do you suppose there might be some connection between the torture of prisoners by the Bush/Cheney Administration—which has been endorsed by many Americans including former Vice President Dick Cheney—and the persecution of Christians in Muslim countries?
