Risk of distance
Having lived much of my life in Houston, I have no doubt there are “sincere, Bible-believing, God-honoring evangelical Christians” who want to partner with our Christian schools. I know something about the early struggles of Houston Baptist University. The school is here today because of the initial leaders, who had a goal—HBU. I pastored one of the Union Baptist Association churches that helped raise initial funding along with the Baptist General Convention of Texas.
With the BGCT behind it, it was only correct for members of the board of trustees to be elected by the BGCT. If the door is opened now to an individual or church not affiliated with the BGCT, then the door is open! If that happens, we can be certain the door will open wider.
If there are individuals or churches that wish some involvement, there is the option of a board of associates. This is a board chosen by the president, but it does not have the authority of the board of trustees.
The BGCT has been in the Christian education ministry for many years. Any step taken by any Baptist entity that runs the risk of increasing distance from the BGCT, and thus from Texas Baptists, is a step that should never be taken.
