No. 1 problem

Candidates, commentators and many other people are saying our No. 1 problem is the economy and jobs. No, the No. 1 problem is the human condition permeated with hatred, abusiveness, greed, infidelity and other sins.

Since all humans have physical, mental and spiritual limitations, it is not reasonable to expect all human deficiencies can be eliminated. However, the failings of mankind can be significantly reduced when people ear-nestly seek to learn and follow the teachings of the heavenly Father. Therefore, help is available.

Woman pope?

Jesus said that whatever you do to the least among men, you also do to him.

Black people certainly were treated as the "least among men" for many years in our country. The Southern Baptist Convention, which used to support slavery, segregation and racism, took a step in the right direction by choosing a black man to lead them. Why did it take so long?

Now, when will the Roman Catholic Church allow a woman to become pope?

Lament for Glorieta

It's so sad that Glorieta has fallen on such hard times. Maybe if it returned to its original purpose, that of instructing church leaders in their various positions and duties, the sale would not be necessary. Why are there no longer Sunday School Week, WMU Week, Music Week and others?

I have precious memories of attending some of these weeks, both at Glorieta and Ridgecrest. Also, when a member of First Baptist Church in Lubbock, we had wonderful retreats in the house the church owned at Glorieta. If the center is sold, what would happen to these church-owned houses?

Please try to save this holy and sanctified place created to praise and glorify God.

Closed churches

Janet Kennedy's letter on churches closing on Sunday night (June 11) is right on.

It seems to be a growing trend to say certain man-designated days are more important to be observed than the day God designates to be observed.

In Isaiah 58:5-6, God addresses Israel's fast or "worship." He asks if it is a fast he has chosen or "something you chose."

In Isaiah 58:13-14, God says if we will stop doing our own ways and ending our own pleasure, then he will bless us. Hebrews 10:25 warns not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together.

Instead of assembling more, we are reducing our worship services. We have virtually stopped revivals and have one service on Sunday night. In past, we had Train-ing Union and worship.

I ask the same question Kennedy did: How does it glorify or honor God or our family to shut the doors of our churches on Sunday night?

Watching TV doesn't honor God and doesn't edify family. We are to be in the world, but not of the world.
