The Lord has been working to teach me a lot about service through two student leaders at the University of North Texas Baptist Student Ministry.
Asa has taught me more about service than I would like to admit, truthfully. I do not serve well. In fact, that is one of the areas in which I struggle most. But as the Lord is bringing students to know him and I have witnessed first-hand how chains have been broken in our students’ lives, I have also realized how God has been using our students to break chains in my own life.
Each week, Asa comes into my office and asks if he can take out my trash. Even though this may seem very small to some, I hate taking out my trash. I’m not sure if Asa knew this about me or if he was simply just trying to serve the BSM staff, but it has meant so much to me. It has also taught me. Since witnessing this, the Lord has used him in my life to convict me to serve others more, even in the ways that I don’t like. I will admit that I have a long way to go, but Asa has helped me get there.
Joy in the gospel
Caleb is another student who has taught me a lot about joy in the gospel. Caleb and I serve together as small-group leaders, and every Thursday, he opens his home for our group. When we first went over to his house, I was nervous. I had in my head that it will probably be messy and smell weird, because, well, six guys live under one roof. However, to my surprise, Caleb had it spotless and clean, and he does this for our group every week.
This is not the only way Caleb serves our BSM. Every chance he gets, he is cleaning, taking out trash or helping with set up at the BSM. Not once have I ever seen him fail to offer or neglect to do it with a smile. We never have to ask him to do anything. He just does it and always does it with joy. This joy has rubbed off on me and showed me how much I need to add this joy to my own life when serving.
I am forever grateful for the leadership and service these two guys show me, as well as the other student leaders at the BSM. The Lord has used them in drastic ways to teach me what true servant leadership looks like at a time that I need it most. I am eternally thankful for the chance to serve with them and learn from them.
