Denton: Doctrine and Dialogue

Every Friday, students meet at the University of North Texas BSM for “Doctrine and Dialogue,” as they discuss various Christian beliefs. At noon, students gather to talk about a chapter from the book Christian Beliefs by Wayne Grudem.

lauren mcKee98Last semester, topics discussed included the Bible, God, the Trinity, creation, prayer, sin, Christ and atonement, as well as angels and demons.

I have seen significant growth in the students who participate. Often, we have students who are not believers come in to argue, and the crazy thing is they are welcomed, too. The students have created an atmosphere that allows others really to determine what they believe and to arrive at belief at their own pace, all the while showing them what Scripture says.

This semester, we are discussing resurrection, election, justification, sanctification, perseverance, death, the church, Christ’s Second Coming, Judgment Day and heaven.

It is a joy to watch as students really dig into these topics. As believers, it is important to understand, develop and defend our beliefs. Theology is important, because what we believe affects how we live every day.

Doctrine and dialogue is preparing students to know how to walk a non-believer friend through these topics, but also preparing them for future leadership in the church.

Lauren McKee, a graduate of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, is serving with Go Now Missions as a campus missionary at the University of North Texas.
