Field trip to remember

I was chosen from among the summer missionaries to go with a group of kids to a museum for a field trip.

The group was made up of some apartment children I don’t usually minister to. I was really excited, because I had never led a field trip before, but it turned out to be a lot harder than it looks to keep 30 hyper children in line.

On the way home, almost everyone was completely exhausted—including me. I was starting to take a nap when a little boy began to kick my seat and ask me questions about my strange pink hair. He was a funny and smart 8-year-old, and I enjoyed talking with him immensely. We talked for about 10 minutes, and I found out his name is David.

Pretty soon we passed a church and David said: “Hey! That’s my church!”

I responded: “Oh really? You don’t go to church near your apartment?”

He surprised me by saying: “No, Jesus doesn’t live there. He can only live in one place at a time.”

Stunned, I begin to explain what it means for Jesus to live in the hearts of his followers, and I ended up sharing the gospel. While I told the story of Jesus, David was absolutely engrossed in it, and he eventually asked me, “How do I get him?”

By that time, the bus had stopped, and we were getting off at the apartments. While the other children had snacks, I was able to sit with David and explain what salvation means and was able to answer his questions. While I was speaking, I felt the Spirit move in me and tell me everything that David needed to hear. It was incredible. David asked me to help him get Jesus into his heart. After the prayer, I could feel an amazing peace fill my heart, and I knew God was happy. I felt a strong connection with David, and I knew from then on he would be my little brother for eternity.

A week later, a fellow missionary from Mission Arlington named Jacob walked up to David at revival and asked, “Hey, do you know Jesus in your heart?”

David answered: “Yes! I said the prayer with a girl who had a thing in her hair.”

My friend asked, “You mean Hailey?”

David answered, “Yeah!”

It was a blessing to hear that story from Jacob. Even more, it was an amazing blessing to be used by the Lord to touch that little boy’s heart. I will never forget that moment.

Mission Arlington has been an amazing experience, and I am so grateful to have been placed here.
