Chad Edgington: This is Going to be Expensive (2 Corinthians 8:1-7)

Chad Edgington—senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Olney and a graduate of Howard Payne University—exhorted his hearers to consider their monetary giving, not in terms of meeting needs, but in relation to their walk with Christ. Giving money isn’t about a budget or a duty, he said, but about one’s faith in God and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Paul used the Macedonian Christians’ giving as an example for the Corinthian Christians to follow. The kind of giving exemplified by the Macedonians differed from the 10-percent tithe called for in the old covenant, Edgington explained. It was more dynamic and expensive; it was more generous, reflecting God’s grace, he said.

The Macedonians’ giving demonstrates so much more, including a challenge to those more affluent, to rise to the same level of faith in and love for Christ. The challenge extends beyond money, Edgington declared.

This sermon was delivered Jan. 22, 2023, for the morning worship service of First Baptist Church in Olney. It is part of Edgington’s 20-year preaching plan to preach through the entire New Testament and part of the Old Testament.
