Obituary: Charles H. Talbert

Charles Harold Talbert, New Testament scholar and former professor at Baylor University, died Nov. 21 in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was 87.

Charles Harold Talbert, New Testament scholar and former professor at Baylor University, died Nov. 21 in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was 87. Talbert was a graduate of Howard College, now Samford University, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and he earned a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. He taught New Testament at Wake Forest University and at Baylor University, where he was named distinguished professor of religion in 1996. Talbert published extensively on the New Testament and edited a series of commentaries called Reading the New Testament. He studied and taught in Germany, Italy and England, and he traveled to biblical sites in Israel, Greece and Turkey. He is survived by his wife Betty Weaver Talbert; son Richard Talbert and his wife Amanda of Winston-Salem, N.C.; daughter Caroline Talbert of Valencia, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
