Baptists Preaching is a column from the Baptist Standard. It is not an effort to advance any one theology or style but to present what a collection of Baptists considers a word from God. Martin Knox: Two Foundations (Matthew 7:24-29)

Martin Knox, senior pastor of Lakeshore Baptist Church in Hudson Oaks, concluded his series on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount by focusing on the two foundations Jesus describes in parable form. The good foundation is like rock; the poor foundation is like sand.

The good foundation starts with prayer, Scripture reading and listening to Jesus. It requires doing “the words of Jesus,” which establishes a sure foundation that holds through life’s storms.

The poor foundation is the foolishness of hearing Jesus and knowing better but doing one’s own thing. Just like wind and waves move sand, a life not built on doing Jesus’ words has no staying power.

This sermon was delivered Sept. 26, 2021, for the morning worship service of Lakeshore Baptist Church in Hudson Oaks. It is the conclusion of a series on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount titled “The Yoke of Jesus.”
