Around the State: BCFS group celebrates end of summer

BCFS Health and Human Services celebrated the end of summer with 90 Tyler youth in foster care enjoying a day of rollercoasters, zip lines and boat rides at the Kemah Boardwalk amusement park.

BCFS Health and Human Services Health and Human Services celebrated the end of summer with 90 Tyler youth enjoying a day of rollercoasters, zip lines and boat rides at the Kemah Boardwalk amusement park. Each year, the agency—formerly known as Baptist Child & Family Services—organizes a back-to-school bash as a reward to children in the foster care system who have stayed in school, focused on their schoolwork and participated in BCFS programs and events throughout the school year.

Nancy Romig, nancy romig130Nancy Romigassistant professor of English at Howard Payne University, presented a paper at the American Literature Association conference in Boston. Her paper was titled “Fitzgerald’s Crisis of Masculinity in The Great Gatsby.”

North Texas Giving Day, Sept. 17, is an online giving event for people in North Texas to raise as much money as possible for local nonprofits in the 16 county region around DFW. A tax-deductible donation through NorthTexasGivingDay.org on Sept. 17 will receive a portion of $1.5 million in bonus funds and prizes. In 2014, more than 98,000 gifts totaling $26.3 million, benefited 1,580 nonprofits.
